Description

Violin made c.1780 in Markneukirchen, Germany, possibly by Johann Gottlob Pfretzshner (1753-1823). Modelled after the work of Jacobus Stainer, the violin's long pattern has high arching that slants steeply towards the narrow edge. The ochre colored varnish is somewhat opaque. The scoll has a slightly oval shaped volute, shallow fluting, and a peg box with a long hollow for the A-string. The violin's most distinctive feature is found on the back, where the purfling extends to a point on the button. This unusual feature is seen on other Markneukirchen instruments from the period, notably those by J.G. Pfretzschner and Johann Christian Voight. The lack of the latter's brand and other stylistic features point toward Pfretzschner, though.

Length of Back: 360mm
